Cradle of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), Europe's first advanced society. Ruled successively by Mycenaeans, Dorians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians and Ottomans before union with Greece in 1913. The six Minoan Palatial Centres were UNESCO-listed in 2025.
