What the chart cannot hold

What becomes visible when you follow paphos mosaics beyond the familiar map?

Cyprus is the Mediterranean's third-largest island, sitting at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, it holds Neolithic Choirokoitia, Crusader-era castles, Venetian walls of Nicosia and mountain monasteries like Kykkos. British colony until 1960 independence, the island has been de facto partitioned since the 1974 coup and Turkish intervention: the Greek-Cypriot south (EU member) and Turkish-Cypriot north, separated by a UN buffer zone cutting through Nicosia — the world's last divided capital.

Mycenaean Greeks, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Ptolemies, Rome (58 BC); Byzantium; Richard I (1191), Lusignan kingdom (1192–1489); Venice (1489–1571); Ottoman (1571–1878); Britain (1878–1960); independence 1960; 1974 division persists.
