Deception Island is the drowned caldera of an active volcano whose breached crater wall forms Port Foster, one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. First visited by sealers around 1820, it hosted a Norwegian shore whaling station (1912–1931), then British, Argentine, Chilean and Spanish research stations, several destroyed by eruptions in 1967–1970. Today it is a major IAATO cruise-ship landing site and a scientific outpost.
