K'gari — 'paradise' in the Butchulla language — is the world's largest sand island, stretching 123 km along the Queensland coast. Its dunes, which migrate 1–2 m a year and reach 244 m, hold over 100 crystal-clear perched lakes and patches of tall rainforest growing on sand. Up to 500,000 visitors a year come for 4WD beach driving, whale watching and the famous wongari (dingoes).
Butchulla homeland for thousands of years; named for castaway Eliza Fraser (1836); logged from 1863 and sand-mined until 1977; UNESCO-listed 1992; officially renamed K'gari in 2017.
