Jan Mayen (55 km long) is a Norwegian volcanic island midway between Iceland and Svalbard, dominated by Beerenberg, Norway's only active volcano. Sighted by Henry Hudson in 1607–08 and named for Dutch whaler Jan Jacobszoon May, it hosted 17th-century whaling stations before Norway annexed it in 1929. NATO-era stations gave way to today's meteorological and coast-guard presence; visits are strictly controlled.
