Rugged, bear-rich island in the Gulf of Alaska, settled by Alutiiq peoples for millennia and the site of Russia's first permanent North American settlement (Three Saints Bay, 1784). Devastated by the 1964 Good Friday earthquake and tsunami, it rebuilt around commercial fishing.
