Komodo is a volcanic island between Flores and Sumbawa, almost entirely protected as Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. Its ~1,800 residents live mainly in Kampung Komodo; the island's savanna hills shelter the endemic Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), found nowhere else except neighbouring Rinca, Padar and western Flores.
Long under Bimanese (Sumbawa) influence, then Dutch colonial rule; Komodo dragons described to science in 1912; national park established 1980, UNESCO-listed 1991.
