Lamu Island hosts Kenya's oldest living town, founded in 1370 and inscribed by UNESCO in 2001 as the best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. No cars: transport is by donkey, dhow and foot between Lamu town, Shela, Matondoni and Kipungani.

Swahili trading port from the 14th century; rose to lead the archipelago after the 1813 Battle of Shela; Omani and British eras; UNESCO World Heritage 2001.
