What the chart cannot hold

What becomes visible when you follow levada walks beyond the familiar map?

Largest island of the Madeira archipelago, a volcanic ridge rising to 1,861 m, famous for its engineered levada irrigation channels turned hiking trails, the surviving Laurisilva laurel forest, and centuries of fortified wine. Roughly half the archipelago's population lives in Funchal on the south coast.

Uninhabited when claimed by Zarco and Teixeira in 1419; settled from ~1425 with sugar then wine economies; briefly occupied by Britain; autonomous region since 1976.
