What the chart cannot hold

What becomes visible when you follow medieval city of rhodes beyond the familiar map?

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese and Greece's fourth-largest island, lying just off the Turkish coast. Home of the ancient Colossus (292–226 BC), it is dominated by the walled medieval city built by the Knights Hospitaller (1309–1522), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Street of the Knights and Palace of the Grand Master. Ottoman (1522–1912) then Italian (1912–1947) rule added mosques, Art-Deco administrative buildings and resort towns before union with Greece in 1947.

Minoan/Mycenaean then Dorian island; Hellenistic sea power and the Colossus; Rome and Byzantium; Knights Hospitaller 1309–1522; Ottoman 1522–1912; Italian Dodecanese 1912–1947; union with Greece 1947 (Treaty of Paris).
