Ross Island is a 2,460 sq km volcanic island in McMurdo Sound, dominated by active Mount Erebus. Discovered in 1841, it became the base for Scott's and Shackleton's expeditions, whose huts survive as historic monuments. Today it hosts McMurdo Station (US) and Scott Base (NZ) under the Antarctic Treaty.

Sighted by James Clark Ross in 1841; base for British heroic-age expeditions; New Zealand's Ross Dependency claim (1923) frozen by the Antarctic Treaty (1961).
