King George Island (95 km long) concentrates more Antarctic stations than anywhere else on the continent, including Chile's Villa Las Estrellas — the only civilian settlement with families — and the Teniente Marsh gravel airstrip. Admiralty Bay is an Antarctic Specially Managed Area rich in penguins, seals and whales. Discovered in 1819 by William Smith, it was a sealing and whaling ground before the science era.
