Nordaustlandet (14,443 km²) is Svalbard's second-largest island and one of the largest uninhabited islands on Earth. Most of it lies under the Austfonna and Vestfonna ice caps; the ice-free north is tundra grazed by Svalbard reindeer with walrus colonies along the coast, including sites like Torellneset. The whole island has been a nature reserve since 1973, visited only by expedition cruises and researchers.

Sighted by Dutch and English whalers in the 1600s; mapped in the 1800s–1900s; WWII German weather station Haudegen (1944–45); Norwegian sovereignty under the Svalbard Treaty from 1925.
