Tongatapu is the political and cultural heart of the only Pacific nation never formally colonised. The low coral island packs in the capital Nuku'alofa with its Victorian-era Royal Palace, the 13th-century Ha'amonga 'a Maui coral trilithon, the stone langi tombs of the ancient capital Mu'a, and the Mapu'a 'a Vaea blowholes that fire spray along the south coast. The January 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption and tsunami damaged western villages and reshaped recovery priorities.
